GRIPS Development Forum & JICA Seminar over
"Japan's Approach to African Development during TICAD IV: The Case of Ehiopia"

(Oct. 2011) The seminar was held on Monday, 17 Oct. This seminar aims to share the results of the first phase of the program, Industrial Policy Dialogue (2009-2011), with a wider audience, show how Japan has been sharing East Asian experience with Ethiopia, and discuss its implementations for Japan's growth support for Africa.

ADB Annual Meeting Seminars
(May 2011) In 3-6 May, 2011 the Asian Development Bank held its 44th Annual Meeting in Hanoi. Prof. Ohno of VDF was the keynote speaker at Vietnam Business Summit where he discussed the risk of middle income trap and importance of policy learning for Vietnam. DPM Hoang Trung Hai, MPI Minister Vo Hong Phuc, Finance Minister Vu Van Minh, SBV Governor Nguyen Van Giau, and ADB President Haruhiko Kuroda also spoke. Prof. Ohno was also a panelist at another ADB seminar on Middle Income Asia, together with Prof. Robert Mundell (Columbia U.), Prof. Dwight Parkins (Harvard U.) and Prof. Ravi Kanbur (Cornel U.) ADB is turning to middle income issues as many of its member countries are graduating from low income. Vietnamese audience and media were also interested in current inflation and how government should cope with it.

Industrial Strategy Making in Taiwan
(April 2011) For 21st century latecomers, industrialization requires comparative analysis of diverse experiences of early achievers to acquire capability to create policy packages that fit their own situations. GDF is studying policy contents and methods of East Asia's industrialized and emerging economies. Following our visits to Singapore and Korea last year, this time we visited Taiwan from March 21 to 25 to learn its policy making procedure and organizations.

Developmental Leadership Program Meeting @ Germany
(March 2011) The Developmental Leadership Program (DLP) meeting was held in Kloster Arnsburg near Frankfurt, Germany on March 10 and 11, 2011. Starting from the premise that politics is central to development, DLP aims to produce pragmatic policy proposals for bilateral and multilateral donors based on case studies of many countries.  The GRIPS Development Forum joined the meeting as the only participant from Asia.
