on "Productivity and the SDGs" at APO Productivity Talk Series
(Nov. 2020)
Izumi Ohno gave a talk on “Productivity and the SDGs” on November 19,
2020, hosted by the Asian Productivity Organization (APO). She discussed
the business sector’s role in meeting the Sustainable Development Goals
(SDGs) and the need for developing countries to join and upgrade Global
Value Chains (GVCs). Special attention was given to the apparel
industry, a typical starting point for developing countries with
significant influence on the SDGs. The importance of economic and social
upgrading was emphasized by reviewing the experiences in Asia and
Africa. Raising productivity is crucial for both types of upgrading.

Opinion of an Editorialist (International Development Journal): The
Future of Japanese International Cooperation
(Nov. 2020) Japanese international cooperation faces enormous
challenges, as the COVID-19 pandemic limits human contact and pushes
people to work remotely using digital technologies. A possible
breakthrough for the future of Japanese international cooperation lies
in the network of overseas experts familiar with Japanese values and
skills, cultivated through longstanding partnerships with Japan. The
Technology Promotion Association (Thailand-Japan) (TPA) is a notable
example in this regard. Here is an article by Izumi Ohno, Professor of
GRIPS, who contributed to The International Development Journal (Oct.
2020) as an editorialist.

New
article of International Development Journal: Era of Digitalization and
Industrial Development of Developing Countries
(Mar. 2020) The East Asian "Flying Geese Pattern" of
development, based on regional production networks among economies with
different levels of industrialization ranging form labor-intensive to
capital or knowledge-intensive manufacturing, has been traditionally
regarded as a successful development model. Now, the digital revolution,
by promoting labor-saving technologies, is bringing new challenges and
opportunities for development paths. What impact will digitalization
have on the future of industrialization in developing countries? Here is
an article by Izumi Ohno, Adjunct Professor of GRIPS, who contributed to
The International Development Journal (Feb. 2020) as an editorialist.
